GOLD PEONY KIMONO KAFTAN

The Gold Peony Kimono Kaftan is a reconstructed kimono with a layered print and embroidery. The first layer of the print is a japanese wax resist dye technique called rezome where the fabric is printed in layers with wax blocking the color applied. It features open leafed orange peonies which are also embroidered using kinkoma embroidery — a traditional decorative technique where a gold-wrapped thread is laid flat on the surface of fabric and secured using small, discreet stitches. the last layer is a Seigaiha gold print.

Peonies represent courage and the Seigaiha symbolises resilience and endurance. The seigaiha motif traveled along the Silk Road from Sassanid Persia through China before arriving in Japan over 1,400 years ago.
